Understanding that universal sanitation solutions in rural areas have particular challenges such as the distance between homes, the naturalization of open defecation and others, an intervention strategy has been generated to achieve Total Coverage • Forever in Sanitation, strategy implemented in partnership with Municipal Autonomous Governments and Private Companies, which is based on generating co-responsibility in families to access a decent bathroom within the framework of the fundamental rights of universal and equitable access to basic services.
The co-responsibility of the family is essential and essential for sustainability, since the strategy begins at the moment in which the family adopts an attitude of change based on a prior analysis of the problems and repercussions of open defecation, an attitude that It is generated in community meetings and workshops that are facilitated by technical staff of the municipality; Next, this attitude of change leads to the construction of a decent bathroom with the materials and characteristics that the family decides.
Care has been taken that, during the application of this strategy, the solution germinates in the families themselves, who invest approximately between 90% to 100% of the resources necessary for the construction of their bathroom and the municipality provides the necessary technical assistance and in some cases a incentive less than 10%.
