Water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the world's population, an alarming figure that is likely to grow as global temperatures rise due to climate change. Although 2.1 billion people have gained access to improved water and sanitation since 1990, the declining availability of quality drinking water is a major problem affecting all continents.

In 2019 the JMP published harmonized baseline estimates for water, sanitation, hand hygiene, health care waste management, and environmental cleaning (WASH) services in health care facilities. The global baseline report found that one in four health care facilities (26%) lacked basic water services, while one in five (21%) had no sanitation service.
